02/10/2016 - East Coast Workers to walk out

bringbackbrWorkers on the East Coat rail network will walk out all day on Monday.

Nearly 200 jobs are under threat at the franchise operated by the Virgin Trains brand. Their union, the RMT, wants to stop the job losses.

“RMT will not sit back while nearly 200 members’ jobs are under threat and while conditions and safety are put at risk by a franchise which is clearly in financial trouble,” said RMT general secretary Mick Cash.

“We will also not tolerate the cavalier attitude to safety that is now on show as the company mobilises its scab army of managers.”

East Coast, a joint Virgin and Stagecoach company, has been running the route into the ground ever since taking over from the public sector in March 2015.

The franchise is rumoured to be losing £1 million a week.

During its five years in public hands, the route made more than £1 billion for the Treasury.

Pat Harrington, general secretary of Solidarity, said: "We need to bring our railways back into public ownership. Privatisation has failed."
